I have a W530 machine with linux mint 17.3, this solution applies directly (for me just Im on a fresh install of Ubuntu Gnome 16.04. As luck would have it, there is a better setting available for backlight brightness. be assigned to the brightness keys on your Keyboard # Type "nvidia-brightness.sh --help"
